My inspiration for this piece is the Rio Grande gorge, a place I’ve spent many an afternoon hiking or just hanging out. I know with such a long river, each little bend has it’s own ecosystem. I would love to see some of the downstream sections one day. Where I was, the river is quick moving and lively and the canyon is pretty steep. In some areas, there are walls of rock on either side of you with just a small window of sky up top, like this one.

While drawing so many detailed botanicals, it was a lovely break to get back to my rock formations, I have so much practice with them and they’re much more intuitive, I simply look at the colors as my guide and create outcroppings, cliffs, and valleys around them. It feels very free.

This painting is done with watercolour and ink on birch panel. The panel is prepared with a base of watercolour medium which is what gives it that toothy texture and makes it absorbent enough to take plenty of wet, runny colour.

It is protected with a UV protective varnish and is ready to hang. The edges are painted so it can be hung framed or unframed, as you wish.
